A TEA MOMENT

GIVE YOURSELF

What is Bubble Tea?

Bubble Tea, also known as boba tea, is a cold, frothy drink that combines tea, milk, and tapioca pearls—the “bubbles” that sit at the bottom of the drink. Bubble tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980s, and by the 1990s, the trend spread across East and Southeast Asia to countries like China, Japan, Vietnam, and Singapore.

Taiwan is the undisputed boba capital of the world. Over the last several decades, these bracing cups of sweet, creamy, chewy refreshment which are also called “bubble tea” and “boba milk tea” have become a go-to beverage throughout not just Taiwan, but also all over Asia, North America, and Europe.

In recent years, the drink has become extremely popular in the United States due in part to its prevalence on social media. Bubble tea has become part of a social lifestyle for many in the U.S. who regularly meet with friends and family at tea shops all over the country.

Boba Explained

The word “boba” can refer to either a broad category of chunky drinks including everything from iced tea with tapioca pearls to fresh juice loaded with fruity bits or black tapioca pearls themselves. Boba tea, bubble tea, and pearl milk tea are essentially different names for the same thing. Whatever you call it, in its most basic form, the drink consists of black tea, milk, ice, and chewy tapioca pearls, all shaken together like a martini and served with that famously fat straw to accommodate the marbles of tapioca that cluster at the bottom of the cup.

These tapioca pearls are derivatives of tapioca starch. The starch is made from cassava plants gotten from South America. The food crops get to Taiwan from Brazil through Southeast Asia during the era of the Japanese occupation around the years 1895 and 1945. During their making process, the pearls are first white in color, tasteless, and rigid. However, they gradually become the tasty treats you love so much after they’ve been boiled in huge, steaming containers and soaked in sugary solutions for long periods. Eventually, the transformation process ends them in the form of springy, black tapioca pearls. It may not sound as delicious as they actually taste but you get the amount of love and time put into making the bubble milk we’ll all come to love.

We, A TEA MOMENT have been big fans of boba tea since we were very young. As living in the South Bay and Westside Area, knowing how difficult it is to find a good boba tea shop in this area, we have aimed to open a boba tea shop that would serve the finest boba tea made with the quality ingredients. We spent months in our kitchen trying out many different teas, mixing tea with different kinds of milk and selecting delicious toppings that would surely make A TEA MOMENT Boba Tea irresistible.
